How does Stevenson describe Edward Hyde and what are the effects for the reader? Essay

Stevenson’s consistency in this book is non-existent. In fact, it is constantly inconsistent. The character Hyde is never fully described in the book of â€Å"The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde†, but the details Stevenson give about Hyde are repeated frequently. The most obvious feature that the reader would like to hear about is Hyde’s face. Stevenson on many occasions disappoints the reader by giving a close focus but never completing it. Bring the reader close, and then ripping it from them. Although the face of Hyde is always kept hidden from us, the stature is not. In the first paragraph of the book, Hyde is described by Enfield as, ‘Some damned Juggernaut’. He is also told to have ‘trampled calmly’. This is odd, as it is contradicting itself. This may have been a ploy by the author to confuse the reader. Stevenson wants to leave the imagination of the reader to wild, to let the reader think for himself. Another example of contradiction in the book is how Hyde is described as both small and as a Juggernaut. Hyde is also described as ‘displeasing, something downright detestable’, ‘He must be deformed somewhere’. On several occasions Hyde is described as being animal/ non-human being like. ‘This was more of a dwarf’, ‘ that masked thing like a monkey jumped’, ‘cry out like a rat’, ‘like some damned Juggernaut’, ‘really like Satan’. This could be Stevenson’s way of telling us that Hyde is not human but purely evil. Trying to hint to us, the reader, something. This obscure appearance makes other people in the book have an immediate hate for Hyde. The doctor who was tending to the girl Hyde had trampled over, whenever he looked at Hyde, wanted to kill him. The doctor had been nicknamed ‘sawbones’ for being so unemotional. The eyes of the family of the girl were filled with hate. There is also a lot of surprise in the book. For example, when Jekyll goes to bed and wakes up finding himself as Hyde, this is the point in the book where we know that he can’t control his transfiguration. He also wakes up with a hairy hand. This is the first time that Hyde is described to us as having a hairy complexion, which also proves the point that Stevenson is constantly surprising the reader with new descriptions. Another point on the surprise and inconsistency point is the fact that Hyde’s/ Jekyll’s character seems to change quite randomly, like in mid-conversation. Talking to Utterson, at first he is shy, but then rapidly becomes more confident. Also, when Hyde is called back after trampling the girl, he seems to be incredibly calm, although he is surrounded by a bunch of hatful people, who could have quite easily reported him to the police. This personality change portrays the theme of the book of split personalities.

Throughout her life Smith went through a lot of heartache with her family and especially within herself. When Stevie Smith became acquainted with the face of death, she was fascinated by the melancholy emotions of depression she began to feel.As a result, Smith utilized her emotions relating to neglect, death, and war in much of her writing. Stevie Smith was best known for her poem â€Å"Not Waving But Drowning,† which is about neglect. In this poem she portrays the speaker as saying â€Å"goodbye† to his so called friends, and welcoming death. She praises grief and sorrow in her poem â€Å"Happiness. † Here she states that all happiness has been inexistent in her life. War was another prominent theme in her writing. Much of her writing was drawn from her own life experiences but various work of literature was influenced by war, the middle class British life, and religion.Her poem, â€Å"I Remember,† was a war themed poem about an elderly man having flashbacks on the Second World War on his bridal night. Her first book, Novel On Yellow Paper, was published in 1936, which was about the uneasy feelings of World War I. Stevie Smith passed away in 1971, resulting from a brain tumor.Stevie Smith’s life was filled with death and grief beginning at age five and lasting until her death in 1971. At the age of five Stevie Smith was diagnosed with Tuberculous peritonitis (Barbara, and Mcbrien 23). After developing this disease she was sent to a sanatorium near Broadstairs. Smith had a very close relationship with her mother. Being away from home and her mother for such a long period of time caused her to experience much stress and anxiety. Smith’s mother died of heart disease when she was sixteen years old, which was a very traumatic experience for Stevie Smi th.Even fifty years later during an interview Smith burst into tears when asked a question about her mothers passing (Huk 39). Unfortunately, she became preoccupied with the idea of death. Smith thought that if she forced death upon herself, her misery would end. Realizing that she hadn’t died and life would continue another day only sustained her thoughts of death, eventually leading her into depression (Barbara, and Mcbrien 25). Being compelled by thoughts of death and grief, Smith frequently incorporated those themes in her poems.In one of Stevie Smith’s interviews she states, â€Å"They are written from the experiences, of my own life, its pressures and fancies, and they are written to give ease and relief to me† (Spalding 197). Smith implies that she writes her poems not only for the enjoyment of her readers, but as a way of coping with her own emotions and feelings. Writing about her sorrows gave her inspiration to continue on and face her troubles. She wr ites more often about her struggles than her happiness, which is shown in her poem â€Å"Happiness. In the poem â€Å"Happiness,† Stevie Smith describes happiness as quiet and nonexistent when she writes, â€Å"Happiness is silent, or speaks equivocally for friends† (ln 1). All of Smith’s life was filled with misery. This poem is about how she never knew the feeling of happiness. She was unaware of how to find happiness because of all the negative experiences in her life that led to such despairing thoughts and emotions. â€Å"Grief is explicit and her song never ends† (ln 3). Smith indicates that she has known this feeling since she was a young girl, which, continued throughout her life.Undergoing these difficult times throughout her life led Stevie Smith to develop a negative view of the world, which she exemplified in her poetry. Stevie Smith’s father owned his own business as a shipping agent. When she was three years old his business, as well as her parents’ marriage, was unsuccessful (Huk 23). As a result, Smith’s father left home and ran away to sea becoming a ship’s purser. She rarely saw her father and when he visited she would often ignore him. Additionally, Smith’s Aunt directed negativity in her life. After Smith’s mother passed away, Smith and her sister lived with their Aunt. Stevie portrays her feelings of neglect in her famous poem, â€Å"Not Waving But Drowning. † This poem is about a man who is stranded out at sea. As he is thrashing in the seas, he is distressed trying to get the attention from the bystanders on shore.They think he is waving â€Å"Hello†, when he is actually attempting to get their attention. â₠¬Å"Nobody heard him, the dead man† (ln 1). The people on shore can be seen as Smith’s Father and Aunt, while Stevie Smith is the man stranded at sea. They both neglected and ignored Stevie, either by abandoning her family or insulting her work. â€Å"Oh, no no no, it was too cold always† (ln 9). This line indicates the loneliness of Smith’s life due to the constant feeling of rejection, from the fleeing of her father and her Aunt doubting her writing capabilities. Stevie Smith grew up during both World War I and World War II (Severin 49).After World War II Smith believed that women suffered in traditional marriages because they often experienced loss of their independence and energy. In her poem â€Å"I Remember† the speaker is an elderly man. He is with his bride on their wedding night while having flashbacks of the World War II. â€Å"Harry, do they ever collide? When the woman asks about the planes colliding, Stevie Smith is referring to the gender roles of men and woman.She is asking if the roles of women and men overlap? She also indicates that these women will inevitably return to their pre-war traditional role as a submissive woman and essentially return to being unhappy. Today, there are over 20 million people living in the Ivory Coast. There are about 39 people per sq. Kilometer. There is a pretty even number of males to females, 51% males, to 49 % females. Most people do not continue school after the primary level. There are multiple factors that contribute to such a low number of educated individuals. One of the main reasons that education is at such a decline now, is because of the current political crisis. The 2010 presidential election between incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and opposition member Alassane Ouattara resulted in a political standoff and violent conflict after Gbagbo refused to honor the results that declared Ouattara the winner. Two elections were held. The initial election did not yield a winner and a second electoral round was held on November 28, 2010. The polling results were released on December 2, 2010 and declared Ouattara the new president of Cà ´te d’Ivoire after he received 54.1% of the vote. The political stalemate turned violent and caused the decline of state security, threatened regional stability, and resulted in gross human rights violations and violence against civilians. The UN reported in March 2011 that over 1000 people were killed in clashes, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees stated that over 500,000 Ivorians were forcibly displaced, and 94,000 Ivorians fled to neighboring Liberia out of fear of violence. The country seemed to be divided. Forces loyal to Gbagbo and Ouattara were accused of gross human rights against civilians which could amount to crimes against humanity including enforced disappearances, sexual violence, and extrajudicial killings. After months of defying the outcome of the presidential election, Laurent Gbagbo was arrested by Ouattara forces on 11 April 2011 following an attack o n his residence in Abidjan. Alassane Ouattara immediately called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission. Cà ´te d’Ivoire now faces many challenges as a result of the far reaching effects of the crisis, including the restoration of peace and security, the prevention of further human rights abuses, and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Alassane Ouattara’s government must now foster peace and reconciliation in Cà ´te d’Ivoire and insure that those responsible for gross human rights violations are held accountable. After the 2010 presidential crisis there were nearly 800,000 children out of school due to the crisis and some are still waiting to get back to learning. â€Å"We arrived at school at 7:30 a.m. as we always do on a school day. At exactly 8:30 we could hear shooting coming from the direction of a neighbouring village,† recalls Pafait Guei, a 14-year-old boy who attended primary school in the western area of Ivory Coast. Instead of being in school, youn g children are seen selling goods on road sides in attempt to earn very little money to support themselves and their family. In a venture to try and help the Ivory Coast education system we have devised a plan that will ultimately rebuild the Ivory Coast education system. Our plan is to obtain a minimum of $10,000,000 dollars from the world bank and Oprah Winfrey to help at least 100,000 children by distributing school bags filled with supplies such as textbooks, pens, pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener to support families in need. We also want to re-open/re-build many schools that were affected by the crisis. Even the ones that have re-opened have a shortage in desks, chairs, and supplies. We plan on hiring more teachers. Most of the schools have 1 teacher per 50 students. We will use all of the money to help the government pay for the teacher’s salaries and hopefully the country will move in the right direction and will be able to afford and continue our efforts once the money finishes. We feel as though Oprah would be a good choice as a financial contributor because of her stand on education, especially after building the school in South Africa, she was quoted saying: â€Å"I think the reason not just Africa but the world is in the state that it is because of a lack of leadership on all levels of government and particularly in regard to schools and schooling for poor children. The best way to effect change long term is to give children exposure and opportunity and nurture them to understand their own power and possibility.† We hope that she would be willing to aid us with a significant amount of funds to move the Ivory Coast forward in the right direction. There are many commendable reasons to donate money to the Ivory Coast. Donating money to the Ivory Coast would only result in positive effects. Only about half of the population is illiterate and many children are not enrolled in school (between the ages 6-10). By donating money to the Ivory Coast, we will be able to begin to change the statistics by creating more education opportunities. We also will make educational resources more accessible to everyone. Those who have some form of education can have the opportunity to extend their education, and those who have no or very little education would have the chance to receive one. Having better education opportunities would not only benefit those going to school, but it would also create jobs. There is usually about one teacher to every fifty children, but with the money we receive, we plan to hire more teachers. Less children in the classrooms means that the children could receive better and more direct attention. This can ensure that the material being taught is actually getting across to each student, and it will become easier to give one on one attention to those who need i t if there are more teachers available to help. Not to mention the fact that the employment rate will increase providing more individuals with a source of income. If anyone were to decide to donate or contribute money to the Ivory Coast you would be a part of our plan to help to build a stronger economy. If we do not invest in education, the education system will continue to fail. But if we can provide money for schooling and education, this can create a better future not just for the Ivory Coast but for Africa as well. If people were to have the credentials needed to land a decent job, this could slowly start to increase income in households. Donations could also help begin to restore order in the Ivory Coast. Because people were displaced, had to flee, or were forced out of their homes, many people of all ag es could not continue to go to school. If we can focus in on trying to get people of the Ivory Coast back in school, this can be a stepping stone to help the country prosper. In the 1980’s education was named one of the country’s main priorities and the plan has proven successful . Education received about one-third of the national budget. Because education was so greatly emphasized, The Ivory Coast education rate changed dramatically. An overall 43% literacy rate increase, 53% for men, and 31% for woman. If we attempt this once again, we are confident that we can get the same, if not better results than we had in the 1980’s.
